Mission: To provide dental care to low income uninsured Canadians suffering from pain and infection.
In 2005, The Urban Dental Clinic was born from a vision of oral health care for all. We started one dental chair and a handful of volunteer dentists operating out of cramped, borrowed space with The Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. The dentists volunteer their time and skill to provide oral healthcare to those who have no insurance and have nowhere else to turn. The need arises because 1 in every 3 Canadians does not have access to private or public dental insurance and many of these uninsured individuals are working poor Canadian adults. Refugees who are unable to afford basic dental care after paying for essentials, e.g., rent and groceries, also receive urgent oral health care.
Twelve years later, in May 2017, the UDC and a growing team of volunteer dentists and dental hygienists has expanded to 3 dental operatories with the generous support of Henry Schein Canada and public donors. An abscess in the mouth is as dangerous and deadly as an abscess anywhere else. Anyone who has experienced dental pain knows the suffering and the disability it can cause. Many Canadians unable to afford dental care turn to hospital emergency rooms for stopgap care at a cost of c. $30 million annually. With our new expanded facility the Urban Dental Clinic is able to treat triple the number of patients.. This will lead to improved health status for patients and major cost savings to Ontario’s health care system.
We relieve pain and address unmet oral healthcare needs so life journeys can continue, to make Canada a better place…
